To find out if the abortion pill is available to you, it’s essential to first research your local abortion laws. As of January 2025, elective abortion is prohibited in Texas, meaning you would need to travel out of state to access abortion drugs in person. Ordering the abortion pill online without medical oversight comes with even greater risks.
However, if you’re still considering seeking the abortion pill, it’s essential to know that the abortion pill is FDA-approved for pregnancies up to ten weeks gestation (70 days). It’s also critical to note that certain medical conditions can make the abortion pill an unsafe option.
At Hope Women’s Center, we offer no-cost ultrasounds to safeguard your health, collect important details about your pregnancy, and find out your available options.
Continue reading to learn more about what an ultrasound can reveal about your pregnancy and how it will help you understand your options.
Verifying Your Pregnancy’s Age and Location
An ultrasound can tell you how far along you are in your pregnancy (gestational age). If you are beyond the FDA-approved ten-week timeframe, a medical abortion may come with more risks, and another procedure may be considered safer.
Additionally, an ultrasound scan can confirm whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus or in another location. The majority of pregnancies develop in the uterus after a fertilized egg implants into the uterine wall. If the pregnancy implants outside the uterus, most commonly inside a fallopian tube, it is considered an ectopic pregnancy.
Ectopic pregnancies are non-viable pregnancies that can be life-threatening due to the risk of internal bleeding. They require immediate medical intervention. Treatment typically involves the use of the drug methotrexate or a surgical procedure rather than an elective abortion.
Confirming the Pregnancy Is Progressing
An ultrasound can help confirm whether the pregnancy is progressing or has naturally ended. About 10-20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, which is a spontaneous pregnancy loss before the 20th week.
An ultrasound scan will screen for a heartbeat, which often develops around six weeks gestation. If no heartbeat is detected, we will refer you for further medical assessment to learn whether treatment is necessary.
An elective abortion ends a progressing pregnancy. If the pregnancy has already ended in miscarriage, the abortion pill would not be the treatment method.
Knowing Your Health Status
In addition to an ultrasound scan, you should also discuss your health history with a medical professional.
Certain health conditions rule out the abortion pill as an option, especially because it triggers vaginal bleeding. For example, it may not be safe for those with anemia, certain blood disorders, or specific heart or blood vessel diseases. Those who take a blood thinner or certain steroid medications should not take the abortion pill.
The list above isn’t exhaustive. It’s best to talk with a healthcare provider about your health status and whether or not the abortion pill would be a safe option for you.
