People should never have to make pregnancy decisions based on finances. If you have an unplanned pregnancy, abortion is not the only available outcome.
Keep reading to understand more about your options: abortion, adoption, and parenting.
How Much Does an Abortion Cost?
The cost of medical abortions without insurance is approximately $500, though this cost can vary. Surgical abortions have an average price of around $1,200, but expenses can go up to $3,000 depending on factors such as insurance coverage and location.
If you are considering traveling out of state due to the ban on abortion procedures in Texas, you should also consider additional costs for lodging, transportation, and more.
Which Resources Are Available for Parenting Costs?
If you’re a woman in Texas with an unplanned pregnancy, abortion may not be the cheapest option, and it is certainly not your only one!
If you’re worried about the financial costs of parenting, many public and private resources exist for women who keep and raise their babies. For example, Texas Medicaid offers medical care to the mother up to 2 months after birth.
Here are a few other helpful resources to consider:
- Child Care Assistance: For eligible parents, Texas offers child care scholarships to help provide an opportunity for parents to continue working.
- Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program: This program includes vouchers and education for nutritious food, assistance with breastfeeding, and healthcare and social service referrals.
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF): TANF provides financial assistance and other services to low-income families.
These are just a few resources available to you. Hope Women’s Center offers free weekly parenting classes and has a Medicaid Officer on-site to help expedite Medicaid paperwork and approval.
Do I Have to Pay for an Adoption?
Making an adoption plan in Texas is 100% free for the birth parent. Adoption agencies or the adoptive family may cover the birthmother’s reasonable living and medical expenses.
Unlike some states, Texas does not have a limit on the exact amount of covered living expenses for the birth parent. Some of these items that may be covered include:
- Rent
- Utilities
- Gas/travel costs
- Maternity clothing
- Groceries
These are just a few of the items that may be covered so that birth parents can pursue adoption without financial burden.
Hope Women’s Center has an adoption agency on-site if you would like to learn more about this option.
