Did your pregnancy test come back positive? An ultrasound is your next step. There’s more information you need before you can make a decision about your unplanned pregnancy. An ultrasound will give you that additional information so you can make an educated and empowered choice.
An ultrasound ultimately answers three important questions: How far along is the pregnancy? Where is the pregnancy located? Is the pregnancy viable?
HOW FAR ALONG IS THE PREGNANCY?
This is important data to know whether you’re considering an abortion, adoption, or parenting. Medication abortion (the abortion pill) is only FDA-approved for use within the first ten weeks of pregnancy. After that, surgical abortion may be recommended as a safer option for you. These are more invasive and can be more costly.
WHERE IS THE PREGNANCY LOCATED?
Did you know that sometimes the embryo implants somewhere other than in the uterus? While rare, sometimes it implants in a fallopian tube. This tubal or ectopic pregnancy is nonviable and can be life-threatening to you if not addressed soon enough.
Ultrasounds will reveal the location of the pregnancy and if it’s outside the uterus so you can seek medical attention immediately.
IS THE PREGNANCY VIABLE?
Even if your pregnancy test came back positive, your pregnancy can be non-viable. This happens if your body naturally miscarries. A pregnancy test may indicate pregnancy, but an ultrasound reveals more details about the pregnancy.
WHEN SHOULD I GET AN ULTRASOUND?
If you receive a positive pregnancy test at Hope Women’s Center, we’ll offer a free ultrasound to provide more information. You can get an ultrasound scan once your test indicates you’re pregnant, but it will give you a clearer picture if you’re farther into your pregnancy.
