As you explore your possible options for your pregnancy, you’ll want to understand the risks and side effects of the abortion pill.

The first thing to know is that you don’t have to go through this alone. Hope Women’s Center offers no-cost consultations to explore your options in a safe, nonjudgmental environment.

About the Abortion Pill

The abortion pill is a series of two different drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. The first drug, mifepristone, is an antiprogestin, which means that it prevents the pregnancy from receiving the hormone progesterone. Without this hormone, the pregnancy ends.

The second drug, misoprostol, induces uterine cramping to expel the pregnancy and tissue from the uterus once the pregnancy has terminated.

What Are the Side Effects?

After taking the abortion pill drugs, you will notice vaginal bleeding and cramping in the stomach area. Some of the other potential side effects include:

  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

What Are the Risks?

Some of the possible physical risks include:

  • Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical treatment
  • An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive symptoms

Schedule a Free Pre-Abortion Screening

At Hope Women’s Center, we provide fact-based medical information and answer your questions about different options.

We also offer no-cost ultrasounds, which can provide crucial details about your pregnancy. For example, an ultrasound can confirm the gestational age of the pregnancy. Medical staff will determine whether to offer this service.

The abortion pill is only FDA-approved through 10 weeks (70 days), so knowing the pregnancy’s gestational age affects your available options.

We also offer complimentary, confidential STD/STI testing as an additional health screening before you pursue the next steps.

Hope Women’s Center does not provide or refer for abortions.
