What Is a Pre-Abortion Consultation?
A pre-abortion consultation is a free medical appointment with our trained team. During your visit, our nurses and medical staff will:
- Provide lab-quality pregnancy testing
- Perform an ultrasound to determine gestational age, pregnancy location, and viability
- Review your health history and discuss any relevant health concerns
- Offer screening for STD/STIs that could affect your health
- Explain your options and the information available to you
- Answer your questions in a private, confidential setting
Why Does an Ultrasound Matter?
This appointment matters because abortion procedures and eligibility are determined by how far along a pregnancy is, and an ultrasound is the most accurate way to determine gestational age.
An ultrasound can also confirm whether the pregnancy is progressing normally. If it isn’t, a natural miscarriage may already be occurring, which could affect the medical care you need.
An ultrasound can also detect an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a pregnancy develops outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. An ectopic pregnancy cannot continue and cannot be resolved by abortion. Left untreated, it can become a life-threatening medical emergency.
Each of these situations requires a different medical response, and none can be confirmed by a pregnancy test alone.
