Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can display a range of symptoms. Getting regularly tested to protect yourself and your partner(s) is essential.  Many STIs are asymptomatic, which means the only way to know if you are infected is with a positive test result.

Syphilis, one of the most common types of STIs, can be identified by some of the following symptoms

  • Rash (that often doesn’t itch) marked by rough, discolored spots over any area of the body, including the palms and soles
  • Fever.
  • Swollen lymph nodes.
  • Headaches or muscle aches
  • Hair loss in patches
  • Weight loss

Common hepatitis symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Upset stomach and vomiting
  • Pain or discomfort in the stomach area, especially in the area of the liver on the right side beneath the lower ribs
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Dark urine
  • Stool that’s the color of clay
  • Jaundice

When to Consider Testing

According to the CDC, you should be getting tested if:

  • You are sexually active
  • Have a new sexual partner
  • Experience any STI-like symptoms
  • Had sex with a partner who tells you they have an STI
  • Are pregnant

For pregnant women, testing for syphilis, hepatitis B and C, and HIV is encouraged regularly throughout the pregnancy.

Do I Still Need STI Testing if I Want an Abortion?

If you are pregnant, getting tested is a great preventative measure because even if you plan to terminate the pregnancy, getting an abortion while also having an untreated STI can increase the risk of pelvic infection after the abortion procedure.

Prioritizing an STI test is an important measure to protect your health before you make a decision about your pregnancy.
