Give Yourself Space to Think
When you first find out you are pregnant, it can be tempting to make a decision immediately just to make the uncertainty go away. However, you owe it to yourself to make your decision based on accurate information rather than panic or fear.
Take a moment to think about how you actually feel about the pregnancy. Try writing down your thoughts and asking yourself questions such as:
- What am I feeling about this pregnancy right now?
- What am I most afraid of?
- What would I want if I knew I had support?
- Am I feeling pressured by anyone to make a particular decision?
- What information do I still need?
- What would each option realistically look like in my life?
You don’t have to have all the answers, but this can be a good starting point for understanding what you truly want.
Make Sure You Have the Information You Need
It is difficult to make a confident decision when you are still missing important information.
A pregnancy test works by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), but it cannot tell you your gestational age (how far along you are), where the pregnancy is located, or whether the pregnancy is developing.
An ultrasound can provide additional information about your pregnancy and may help identify concerns such as an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus. This is a medical emergency, and this condition requires specific treatment. The abortion pill cannot be used to treat an ectopic pregnancy.
You can also take time to understand what parenting, adoption, and abortion could look like for you. Having accurate information about your options can help you feel more confident about making a decision.
Learn About the Support Available
Sometimes what feels impossible on your own can feel more manageable when you know what support is available.
Consider what you may need, whether that is help with parenting education, baby supplies, housing referrals, healthcare resources, education, employment, or simply someone to talk to.
Hope Women’s Center offers weekly parenting classes, counseling, and a rewards program that gives you access to our boutique. Knowing that you have support and resources can change how you see your options and help you feel confident about making a decision.
