WHAT IS THE NEW TEXAS ABORTION LAW?
Effective September 1, 2021, once a heartbeat is detected, an abortion cannot be performed in Texas.

WHAT IF I DON’T SEE A HEARTBEAT?
There are many reasons why a woman can have a positive pregnancy test and a heartbeat cannot be detected on an ultrasound.

• You may be too early in pregnancy for a heartbeat to be detected.
• You may not have a viable pregnancy. About 10 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage.
• If you don’t have a viable pregnancy, an abortion may be not necessary.
• Obtain another ultrasound in a few days/ a week to confirm you are pregnant.

WHAT IF I GO TO AN ABORTION CLINIC?
The abortion provider is required to perform an ultrasound 24 hours prior to the administration of an abortion (some exceptions may apply) and must attempt to record a fetal heartbeat. If you are seeking an abortion at a clinic and they find a heartbeat but still complete an abortion, they are in violation of the law.

If the clinic says that a heartbeat is not present, then an abortion procedure may not be necessary. You can follow up with your local medical provider for continuing care.

WHAT IF I BUY THE ABORTION PILL ONLINE?
The online sale of abortion medication is prohibited by law in Texas. Before seeking an abortion by taking pills, Texas law requires you to have an ultrasound 24 hours before starting the medication. This must be done in person by the physician providing the chemical abortion.

WHAT IF I’VE TAKEN THE FIRST ABORTION PILL AND REGRET MY DECISION?
The abortion pill is a 2-part process. If you begin the chemical abortion process and have only taken the first pill, you can still change your mind.
